A **gingerbread house decorating party** is easier to host when the houses are already standing and every guest has somewhere to put a finished roof. This plan is for **six or eight adults**, with one small preassembled edible house each, three modest candy portions and a take-home box ready before anyone starts.

The evening is about decorating, rather than baking or building walls under time pressure. Guests can choose a simple doorway and roof pattern, sketch without decorating or take their kit home unopened. The printable activity kit supports those choices with a guest planning mat, exterior box tags, supply counts and a host timeline.

## Choose the house before buying the extras

For this plan, choose a **preassembled edible house with a footprint no larger than 6 x 6 inches and a total height no greater than 8 inches**, including its chimney. These are shopping limits for the workspace below, not the dimensions of a particular brand. Confirm the actual assembled dimensions and included contents with the seller or package before paying.

Look for a sound assembled shell, ready-to-use decorating icing, complete ingredient information and instructions for setting and storage. Choose edible sugar decorations rather than loose craft supplies. If a kit needs wall construction, it belongs to a different schedule: assemble it ahead exactly as directed, with its full setting time, or switch to a preassembled version.

Read all kit, icing and candy labels with guests who have allergies or other ingredient needs **before shopping**. The [FDA's food allergy guide](https://www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-food-labeling-and-critical-foods/food-allergies) explains packaged allergen labeling, including sesame. Separate bowls and tools do not make a shared table allergy-safe. If you cannot meet someone's needs with suitable products and handling, offer a paper sketch or another activity they choose.

## Download the free gingerbread party kit

Both files contain the same **four pages**:

- [A4 gingerbread decorating party kit, 4 pages](/downloads/gingerbread-party-kit-a4.pdf).
- [US Letter gingerbread decorating party kit, 4 pages](/downloads/gingerbread-party-kit-letter.pdf).

**Page 1 is a guest planning mat**, with room for a name, two colours, a house sketch and a take-home check. Print one for each decorator and keep it beside the work mat. Ordinary printer paper is not a food-contact liner; the house stays on its separate cake board.

**Page 2 has eight exterior box tags**, each **3 x 2 inches** at Actual Size. Cut on the rectangles and attach outside the box. The tag includes a name and date, a level-carry reminder and a reminder to retain original labels. It does not replace ingredient or storage information.

**Page 3 is the host supply count**, with six- and eight-person totals and fields to subtract icing and candy already in the kits. **Page 4 is the flexible host timeline**, including portioning, decorating, setting and packing.

Use the matching paper-size file, print single-sided at Actual Size or 100%, and measure the **one-inch check line** on page 2 before cutting tags. Six decorators need **nine single-sided sheets**: six copies of page 1 and one each of pages 2-4. Eight decorators need eleven sheets. Copy paper works for the planning pages; tags can use 160-200 gsm card if your printer supports it. The files are handwriting worksheets, without an account or email requirement.

## Give each adult a clear workspace

Place each small house on a **10 x 10 inch rigid food-contact cake board**, on a washable **18 x 12 inch work mat**. Allow a seated table position **24 inches wide by 18 inches deep**, including the board, three small portion cups and a little elbow space. Keep the paper planning mat beside the food workspace or move it away once guests finish sketching.

For six people, a **72 x 36 inch table with three places on each long side** meets those planning rectangles. For eight, use a **96 x 36 inch table with four places on each long side**, or two 48 x 36 inch tables with two places on each long side. Check actual chair clearance and room routes; a tabletop rectangle does not guarantee comfortable seating in a small room. Avoid squeezing extra decorators onto the ends while boxes and refill tubs occupy that space.

Keep drinks, spare kit packaging, boxes and candy reserves on a separate surface. Skip a bulky centerpiece on the work table. Each person gets their own icing pouch or piping bag; pass a clean refill spoon rather than the guests' used tools. Wash hands with soap and water for **20 seconds** and clean food-contact surfaces before handling supplies, following [FDA holiday food guidance](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/food-safety-tips-healthy-holidays).

## Count icing, candy and supplies for six or eight

Use these **planning allowances for restrained decorating of the chosen small houses**. They have not been measured at a physical gathering. Give each guest **120 g of ready-to-use decorating icing** and **60 g of edible candy**, divided into three 20 g portions. Budget another **25%** of each as a covered reserve. The candy portions can be one colour mix, small white sweets and sprinkles; choose products that fit the group's ingredient needs.

| Supply | Six adults | Eight adults |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Preassembled small houses | 6 | 8 |
| 10 x 10 inch food-contact cake boards | 6 | 8 |
| Washable 18 x 12 inch work mats | 6 | 8 |
| Icing assigned to guests, 120 g each | 720 g | 960 g |
| Additional 25% icing reserve | 180 g | 240 g |
| **Total icing budget** | **900 g** | **1,200 g** |
| Candy assigned to guests, 60 g each | 360 g | 480 g |
| Additional 25% candy reserve | 90 g | 120 g |
| **Total candy budget** | **450 g** | **600 g** |
| Small food cups, three each | 18 | 24 |
| Roomy take-home food boxes | 6 | 8 |
| Guest planning mats, exterior tags and pencils | 6 of each | 8 of each |

The totals **include the icing and candy already supplied in the kits**. Weigh or use the labeled net quantities, then subtract them before buying extras. For six kits containing 100 g of icing each, the 900 g budget needs **300 g more**, not another 900 g. If the supplied icing already meets the budget, buy zero extra. Use the same subtraction for candy.

Keep refill quantities covered until needed and retain every original product label. If icing comes in one shared tub, portion it into food-use piping bags according to the maker's directions with clean utensils. These amounts cover decorating; they do not include a bowl of snacks to eat while working. If you are also serving food, make a separate plan with the [party food calculator](/stories/party-food-calculator).

## Decorate in a simple order

Ask each guest to choose two colours and sketch one detail first. A doorway, a dotted roof edge and a few candies can be enough. Heavy layers and elaborate towers are optional ambitions, not requirements for a finished house.

1. **Keep the assembled shell on its board.** Follow the kit's directions rather than loosening walls to change the design.
2. **Try a small icing detail on the board's food-contact surface**, then attach a few candies to the sides. Keep the piping tip clear of shared food tubs.
3. **Move to the roof** after the sides. Use modest amounts and ask for a clean refill if needed.
4. **Stop adding weight and allow the maker's setting time** before moving the house. Photograph it in place; nobody needs to hold a roof for a picture.

Use only decorations intended to be eaten. The [FDA explains why a product marked only non-toxic or for decorative purposes does not belong directly on food](https://www.fda.gov/food/food-additives-petitions/fda-advises-home-and-commercial-bakers-avoid-use-non-edible-food-decorative-products). Craft glitter, hot glue and ornamental greenery are unnecessary here. This plan uses packaged ready-to-use icing; if substituting a recipe that calls for raw eggs, follow the [FDA's advice to use pasteurized egg ingredients](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/food-safety-tips-healthy-holidays) and the recipe's storage directions.

## Leave room in the schedule for packing

Use a **90-minute gathering** as a flexible starting point: ten minutes for arrival and handwashing, ten to sketch, 35 to decorate, fifteen to stop adding decorations and allow setting, and twenty to pack and tidy. Setting time varies with the actual icing and design. Extend that pause or arrange later pickup if the maker's instructions require more time; the clock does not make a fragile roof ready to move.

Portion supplies and set the table before guests arrive. A [hot chocolate bar](/stories/hot-chocolate-bar-ideas) can sit on the drinks surface, with refills away from the houses and papers. Offer a quiet show-and-tell if people want one, without requiring voting or a prize for the best house.

## Pack from the board and keep the original labels

For the specified **10-inch board and house no higher than 8 inches**, plan a food-transport box with **internal dimensions of at least 12 x 12 x 12 inches**. Measure the board and finished roof clearance before shopping for boxes. Box listings may give external dimensions, and a broad roof overhang can need more space than the wall footprint suggests.

Lift from the board, place it flat in the box, and close the lid without touching the roof or candies. If needed, use a clean non-slip support **under the board**, away from edible surfaces. Attach the printable name tag outside, then provide the original kit and added ingredient labels, plus the maker's storage instructions. Do not wrap film tightly around the house.

Carry the closed box level from its base and place it on a stable flat surface for the trip. Keep it clear of direct heat and follow the particular kit's storage guidance. A cracked roof can go home as decorated cookie pieces; the plan does not depend on every house remaining perfect. The [cookie exchange guide](/stories/cookie-exchange-party) is another option when the group would prefer finished treats to a decorating activity.
